What We are Professional AT:
Tooth loss is something many patients hope they never have to deal with, but technology has assisted in providing excellent options for natural looking and functioning replacements.
A dental implant is a small titanium screw that is surgically placed into the jaw bone to support a single tooth, bridge or denture. After the implant is placed it takes a period of 4- 6 months to integrate itself into the jaw bone. The dentist will monitor the implant healing through regular follow-ups, and the permanent prosthesis (crown, bridge or denture) can be placed when healing is confirmed. Once the process is complete the tooth looks, feels and functions like a natural tooth.
Dental implants have proven to have an excellent success rate making them a great permanent option for patients to restore the natural look, feel and function of a tooth. The teeth adjacent to the implant do not require to be compromised, and bone loss is prevented by having a structure integrated into the bone where the original tooth used to be. Patients who wish to have implant treatment require to have healthy gum tissue, an adequate amount of bone and other factors such as the location of the patient’s sinus and nerve are also considered to ensure the implant treatment is successful. If there is not enough bone present to place an implant, procedures such as bone grafting can be done to increase the amount of bone, and an implant can subsequently be placed. Also, some patients may require procedures such as a sinus lift if there are concerns that there may be an interaction with the sinus during implant placement.
When determining if a patient is a suitable candidate for implant dentistry our dental professionals consider many things. A thorough oral examination is done, radiographs, including in-office cone beam CT scan and patient medical history, are all extensively reviewed. If necessary, a surgical guide is fabricated with the help of the in-office CT scan before the surgical appointment to facilitate the precise placement of the implant into the jaw. Our dentists will formulate a treatment plan and provide treatment options, fees, discuss benefits and risks and ensure patients are fully educated on the process from beginning to end.
All on 4 Implants method is used on patients who require all of their upper or lower teeth replaced. It is used instead of a conventional denture to prevent bone loss and is an excellent long term solution that provides optimal comfort, aesthetics, functionality and cost-effectiveness. With this option, four implants are placed in the jaw and a fixed denture is inserted onto the implants immediately after surgery. Bone grafting is usually avoided with this option by tilting the implants to use available bone, making this option more affordable, quicker and improves the overall quality of life for those who require a full clearance denture. To date, over 100 000 people have opted for all on four implants and 98% would recommend this treatment.
A dental crown is a permanently fixed restoration that is placed by the dentist. The placement of a crown assists with strengthening a damaged tooth, as well as its overall appearance and functionality. In preparation for a crown, the dentist decreases the size of the tooth by shaving enamel, takes impressions (or in some cases digital scan) and matches the shade of the tooth so that it fits perfectly in size and colour to the previous tooth and those surrounding it. There are instances when a crown may come off or become loose, but if crowns are well taken care of they may potentially last a life time. If a crown is not placed on a tooth with a compromised structure, further deterioration, wear and, ultimately, losing the tooth are all a possibility.
Invisalign is an orthodontic treatment that is virtually invisible. It is a modern technique used by our office to assist patients in achieving perfect alignment, function and aesthetics by using clear aligners to reposition the teeth.
An initial consultation is required to determine if the patient is a candidate for Invisalign. At this appointment, our dental team will take radiographs, photos and impressions to get a complete diagnostic workup of the mouth. Risks, benefits and possible results are discussed and the data collected by our team is forwarded to Invisalign to assist in creating a customized treatment plan. Our dentists work in conjunction with the specialists at Invisalign to formulate a treatment plan that can be previewed prior to the start of treatment. This feature enables the patient to see what final results can be expected and provide them with the opportunity to discuss this with the dental team. Once the treatment plan is approved, Invisalign will begin the process of fabricating the custom aligners. When the aligners are ready, they are sent directly to our office and can be inserted. Invisalign enables patients to eat, drink and perform daily activities without being affected. Individual results and length of treatment plans vary.
